The topic of discussion on 07th May 2018 at Journal Club Meeting was ‘an overview of eye tears’’. Tears are the fluid secreted by the eyes to nourish it by maintaining ingredients balance and moisture content of eyes. Tears demonstrate not only our deep emotional connections with our world but allow us to visibly celebrate that fact. Tears produced by the lacrimal gland that sits in-between eyeball and eyelid, spontaneously blink, spreading the tear as a film across the eye. The tears secretes every second at the rate of 02 μL/min. The tears secretes by the lacrimal gland situated laterally and spread by periodic blinking of the eyelids and drained by the puncta. The tear film is the thin layer of tear fluid secreted continuously by the lacrimal glands. The tear film is spread across the eye and it has three layers namely, lipid layer, an aqueous layer, and a mucous layer. Cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone are stress biomarkers present in tear secretion. The thickness of tear film is mainly by the aqueous secretions of the eye and it contributes nearly 60% of the total value. Tear secretion is classified into three types namely, (a)basal tears: secreted and spread continuously, (b) reflex tears such as thiopropanal S-oxide in onions induces tear secretion by reflex mechanisms and (c)emotional tears with either positive or negative emotions. Generally, women tend to cry for 06 mins whereas men only for 02 to 03 mins.
